A full week in Chocowinity, NC at the Twin Lakes RV Park

We found another campground included in our Thousand Trails membership that we liked! We really had a great, relaxing time at the Twin Lakes RV Park in Chocowinity, NC. While mostly a residential RV park, the campground area was comfortable and we had plenty of space around our site. We’d spend another week there and recommend it if you are in North Carolina.

Check out our bike ride through the campground to get an overview of how it is laid out:

What it seems we did most at this campground was take walks and bike rides. It was quiet without much traffic so was nice to just go out for a stroll. There were three pond areas that you could catch and release fish in, but also an inlet area for all the residents’ boats. In these water areas, there were dozens of different kinds of ducks and turtles as well as fish that jumped right out of the water.

Check out this heron on the dock. We seem to find heron wherever we go!

It was quite common to see campers sitting along the edges of the water in their golf carts with their fishing poles in the water. I imagine it was good fishing by the amount of fish we saw jumping!

I would say the amount of water around the campground is what made it beautiful. The reflections and the fountains in the middle of the ponds were beautiful and lit up at night.

Our particular site was a back-in site, but there seemed to be mostly pull-through sites. As it is part of your Thousand Trails Membership, you will most likely find that they assign you a site at check-in, unlike some Thousand Trails that they let you pick your site. We saw everything here from pop-ups to full-out motor homes, showing you what these sites could accommodate.

I’m a sucker for a cabin in the fall, and this campground had a few different kinds. I like these rustic ones lining the side of one of the many ponds. They must be utilized a lot as they were full on the weekend we were there.

I could see myself sitting on the porch bench while steaks were cooking on the charcoal grill looking out at the water, couldn’t you? We didn’t ask to look inside, but the outsides were cute and cozy.

A couple of the days we were here, we took a drive to Greenville which had quite a lot of stores and restaurants. We’d been looking since we left Vermont for a place to buy jean shorts, but because the “summer season” was over, we had yet to find any. We finally found some in the mall in Greenville.

We also went to our first Camping World. We needed a new rug for outside the camper. We not only found that, but also got new chairs and handle for the screen door. Because we are Good Sam members, we saved 10%, which they put on top of the 10% for the military discount. We will be shopping here again!

There was a decent game room at this campground, in the same building as the laundry and camp store. However, unlike previous campgrounds, this one was all for a fee. We played unlimited pool at one of the prior campgrounds, but this one was $1 each. I’ll be honest…there were times when we had to choose between another game of pool or doing laundry. Don’t worry, we wore our socks an extra time, but wrote off another pool game as a geometry lesson for Emma! She is getting quite good!

Our one complaint at this campground really would be the laundry facilities. There were two on the property. One on the far side with all the residential sites. There were only a few machines there and two of them were out of order. On our side of the campground, there were three machines, and one of them was out of order. We tried several times to get over there to throw a load in only to find the working ones full. If you aren’t going to have that many machines, you should at least make the ones you do have work. Quite a few campers rely on the washers on property.

The pool was closed as well, but they are hit or miss this time of year. We weren’t far enough south to have it open year-round. No biggie!

The final thing to mention about this campground that we haven’t seen anywhere else yet is the water refill machine. We had been buying individual bottles of water since we started this RVing adventure. It’s not that that has cost us that much, but rather our trash is always full of plastic bottles, and I’m finding them in every cup holder in our chairs and truck doors. We had heard other RVers mention Primo water bottles. You can trade them in for credit at Walmart and Food Lion. We just hadn’t taken the plunge to get one yet.

We were waiting to find a spout for it. Obviously, in a traveling camper, we don’t want a full-on water machine (like you have in an office where you have to tip the jug upside down). That just screams disaster. But we saw in a video that someone had a spout for theirs. There are some spouts that you have to pump to get water out – which would take forever to fill up a water bottle. Instead, we wanted the rechargeable kind. This is what we bought. You recharge it and then stick the tube into the bottle. When you want water, you just have to push the button to start the flow and push it again to stop the flow. It’s worked perfectly so far. We are having to keep our ice trays in the freezer full though because the water is room temperature. We’ve been swapping these jugs out at Food Lions in which they give you a credit for the exchange. I believe the last one we paid was $7.99. However, this campground had a refill station. Check it out!

This was so neat to find! It was clean water and only cost 50 cents per gallon. That’s right, $2.50 to fill our five-gallon jug. Totally worth it! We will be searching for these from here on out!

All in all, we had a great time at this campground. We got a few miles of walking and biking in each day. We got to see a lot of wildlife. And we had plenty of time to sit by the fire and relax. If you are in the area and a Thousand Trails member, I’d recommend this campground.
