Man, did we miss state parks! We come from Vermont which has many different state parks, most with similar themes. They are wooded, private sites. Many are right on a beautiful lake. Most have beaches to sit on and nature trails to walk on. They are a place to be one with nature. Having spent the last few months mostly at RV parks, we didn’t have that, nor did we realize how much we missed it, until we got to this little state park in Mississippi: Lake Lincoln State Park.
Off to a State Park
As you know, we left Florida a couple of weeks ago and have begun to head west. While we want to see as much as we can in our travels, we also want to get our state map filled up on our camper. It doesn’t symbolize that we went to each of the states, but rather that we camped in them. So in traveling west we have been trying to be sure we find someplace in each state. This led to a google search of state parks in Mississippi, and then to Lake Lincoln State Park.

This park was beautiful, and surrounded by Lake Lincoln, is Wesson, MS. In fact, the site we were in was surrounded by the lake on three sides. It was a gorgeous view every morning upon waking! The following picture was taken actually one morning out of my bedroom window. What a view!

The flyer for the campground says, “Nestled in the shade of towering hardwood trees, Lake Lincoln State Park is the quintessence of serenity.” That I would have to agree with. From the picture above, you can see the tall towering trees. And being out in the woods at a state park looking at a lake was certainly serene.
Cooking Outside?
This was the first campground in several months that had either a fire pit or a charcoal grill. You don’t know how much you miss these things until you don’t have them. We used the charcoal grill to make burgers and hot dogs, but over our next campfire, we will be digging out the Dutch oven that goes over the fire pit. Read our chili recipe for that here.
One thing we loved was all the paved roads that weaved through the park. They were a perfect way to get out and ride our Lectric bikes. Check out our bike tour of the campground here. We did edit out quite a bit of the roads because we just wanted to give you an idea of the campground. You’ll have to visit yourself to get the full effect!
As you can see from that video, there are a few cabin rentals, but mostly the campground has RV sites and tent sites. The website (www.mdwfp.com) made it very easy to enter what you have for a rig to be sure it would fit in the site you select. We were in the pull-through site number 63. It was easy to pull right in and hook up in a matter of minutes. And like I said before, we had water views on three sides of us. It was very common to see fishermen out in the early morning hours as well as into the night.

Emma was often out on one of the docks fishing as well, though she didn’t have much luck.

I don’t know if this was because she loves fishing or because there was no cell service here. But either way, she spent a lot of time at the water’s edge. Her father was able to reel one in. But, obviously, we didn’t keep it!

No cell service? What are we going to do?
That is an important thing to keep in mind if you are a full-time RVer and planning to come here. There is no cell service or wifi. If you work from home or the kids have online classes, you likely won’t have service. We needed to make a phone call one day and had to ride our bikes up to the main road to get service to call. No biggie, but it’s something to be aware of depending on the type of camping you are doing.

For us, it meant more time reading books, playing games, and fishing! We even got the girls (yes, ages 11 and 15) to play on the playground a little. They aren’t little anymore, so that doesn’t happen often!

This campground is probably quite popular in the summer months. There were a lot of picnic tables around one section for picnics near the fire, along with charcoal grills. Along with these, there are several pavilions available for larger gatherings.

A Lack of Boat Rentals
One thing about the park that I wish were different, was that there were boats to use, like kayaks and canoes. The lake seemed quite peaceful and we would have liked to go paddle around. These are quite commonly rented out at state parks. We did inquire about it, but the park itself doesn’t have any. There is a store across the street that offers rentals, but we would have had to drive to pick them up and then load them in our truck, drive them down to the lake, and then cart them back to the store after. PLUS the state park charges you a fee to put a boat in the water, so we would have had to pay that fee as well. That would be the suggestion I would have as an offering to the park.

This park was beautiful and a great place to hang out for a few days and reconnect with nature and each other. If you like the state park vibe, check this place out!
