The Savannah South KOA – great for a week or just passing through

The Savannah South KOA seems to be the spot for RVs passing through on their way south to Florida. The four nights we spent there many motor homes came and went after just one night, presumably to sleep before heading the rest of the way into Florida. This park was about a quarter of a mile off of I-95, making it a great stopping point on your way through. Gas, restaurants, and a place to park for the night.

It was a four-night stay on our way from South Carolina to Florida. We did have to get that Georgia sticker on our state map! This is the one we bought and have been filling up. If you follow us on Facebook, you have probably seen our videos as we add these stickers. If you don’t follow us on Facebook – well you need to! We post a few times a day there and not all of it makes it onto these blog posts. Click here to go to our FB page and click follow! We appreciate all the support on all of our platforms!

Upon check-in, we were escorted by camp staff in a golf cart right to our pull-through site. We were happy to have an end site, so we had neighbors on one side (and only one of the four nights was someone on the other side). From our dinette window, we could see palm trees, the campground pond, as well as swans, geese, and herons around the water. It really was a great place to sit in the morning or to get some writing done. It’s not common in RV parks to have that nice of a view, so we will take it whenever we can get it! Check it out:

There was a Dollar General just across the street and we needed dog food one night. Guess what I found there? A tiny white Christmas tree (as shown in the photo above). Always wanted a white tree and Aliyah has been begging to decorate. A $5 white tree for our table was perfect! Such a nice little Christmasy feel to it!

A full bike-through of the campground can be seen here. We tried to spare you from seeing the middle of the campground with tons of RVS and just give you the general gist of the campground. Enjoy!

This campground had all different sizes of rental cabins, each just as cozy as the next and almost all of them seemed to have views of the pond. Check out some of the different types:

Whether you want just a one-room rental or what appears to be a full cabin, this place has it for you. If you don’t travel with an RV, that is.

The RV sites appeared to be all pull-through sites. As mentioned, many motorhomes pulled in at night and were gone the next morning. I imagine it was tight corners for some of the big ones like that to pull in and out, but we had no problem with our trailer which is 29 feet. The site was level and easy to feel comfortable in.

I was pretty excited to get to Georgia to try out a recipe I’d had for quite a while for peach cobbler made in the dutch oven over the fire pit. Given that it was the state of the peach, I’d been waiting for Georgia to make it.

We’d seen plenty of billboards on the interstate mentioning a place called Peach World, so naturally we went there for peaches. You know what we didn’t find there? Peaches. Seriously.

Georgia Peach World

They had plenty of peach-flavored things and canned peaches, but no regular peaches. Probably the wrong time of year for fresh. There were jams, ciders, cookies, etc. The girls loved the peach slushies and recommend them if you ever make it to Peach World. The candles all smelled wonderful and all the samples we tasted were delicious.

However, no actual peaches so we had to get them from the grocery store. A few hours later, we had peach cobbler simmering over the fire pit, smelling wonderful. Would I share the recipe? I’d look one up on Pinterest if you want to make it. The recipe was good, but nothing I’d write home about 🙂

A trip to Savannah wouldn’t be complete without actually going into Savannah, right? The campground was actually in Richmond Hill, GA, so just outside of Savannah. We had heard from camp staff about the historical downtown area of Savannah with its cobblestone streets and decided to head there, for lack of knowing where else to go. The area was pretty with all the touristy shops and whatnot. There were even camera crews with cameras set up all over. They must have been preparing to film something. There were signs for the Christmas holiday shops opening that weekend, so perhaps it was a commercial for that.

We chose not to buy any touristy things there but did stop at Starbucks. The kids will probably tell you their favorite part of Savannah was probably these Peppermint Frappucinos. They sure hit the spot!

The only other thing we did outside of the campground was go see Elf the Musical. We took the girls a year ago to see Footloose while on a cruise and they loved it. Seeing that there was a musical in town that they would recognize from a movie they’d seen seemed like a good idea.

The play was at the Historical Savannah Theater. It was a beautiful old theater with comfy seats and a packed house! The play was cute and well put together. All in all, it was a great experience for us to broaden our horizons.

Back at the campground, we made use of the rec room several times. The laundry mat was next to it, so it was easy to start laundry and go sit here instead of going back to our site. There were many folding tables good for playing games, couches for reading, as well as a pool table and ping-pong. The items needed to play these things were in the camp office and just needed to be signed out.

I, again, thought it weird that we were so far south (where it’s so much warmer than Vermont) yet the pool was closed for the season. Definitely one of the things I’ve been shocked about as we move South. However, it was 41 degrees one morning when we got up so I get it. It did look pretty though.

The outdoor pool

I’m sure this is a very popular spot in the summer, as well as the playground behind it. As for November, it is a quiet area.

The pond and all the wild birds were really neat to see at all hours of the day. There were herons, egrets, swans, and cormorants. They were swimming around, flying, roosting in trees, etc. Very cool to see them sunbathing along the banks. While we didn’t see any, there were of course alligator signs. Soon enough we will see one, I’m sure.

I’ve said it before, but anywhere where there’s wildlife and water is pretty to me. You may not be able to swim in, but you can still enjoy looking at it.
