Our Stay At the Twin Mountain/Mt. Washington KOA (N.H.)

We walked. We swam. We chilled. What more do you want from a campground?
A forecast of rain didn’t deter us from making a weekend trip to the Twin Mountain KOA in June. Our last stay there was over 10 years ago – we were those people that had bummed some ground space for our tent next to our friend’s camper. (Looking back, this is probably when our dream of being camper owners first began.) This time, camper in tow, we made it there ourselves and had a great weekend.
This campground is everything you’d expect from the KOA brand: friendly staff, nice sized playground, clean pool, mostly wooded sites, firewood delivered to your site on a golf cart, log chairs for sitting in common areas, assorted size cabin rentals (and a caboose) and wooden porch swings in front of the smaller cabin rentals. The campground is cute, cozy, well-maintained and perfect for us.

When booking our stay here, we were able to only pick the type of site we wanted, not select the actual site we wanted. With few selections left for that weekend, we picked a back in site with full hook-ups. While it was near the pool and just up from the playground, it was also near every person that walked by, as the bathroom and showers were kitty corner from the site. The dump station was also right there so if another camper left the cover off slightly, the whole area smelled horrible! We really were close to EVERYTHING.
Our actual site was cute and cozy. Our camper is 29 feet and has one slide – it was a bit of a snug fit. The truck had to park sideways to fit in our site confinements. But we did fit! The downside to having the small site, the fire ring was right up near the park road. It didn’t bother us so much this time because the weather was not great and we spent some time in the camper, however had we wanted to sit by the fire each night or morning, the foot traffic going by would have been right next to our ring. Not ideal if you want some peace and quiet.
One of our favorite things to do at campgrounds is walk around the all the trails and roads in the morning. For one it gets us out and about and some exercise, and two, we get to explore the grounds. We can observe the setup of other campers. Sometimes you see some neat accessories or decorations that spark some creativity of your own. You might see some camp chairs that you like and have been meaning to replace. You could stalk what other internet brands people have on their campers. But usually on these walks, we to take the campground map with us that they give us at check-in (click here to view this campground’s map). If it’s our first time there it helps us not get lost (some campgrounds are bigger than others). But more importantly, we can circle sites that we would like to book when we return to the campground. Maybe they are more private, or maybe they are facing a different direction, or closer to one of the amenities we like.

Because of our smallish site this time, we were in search of a site that was more spacious and quieter. We did like being near the pool (to avoid walking a half mile in a wet swimsuit) but wanted to be in an area a bit more private with less foot traffic walking by. The sites we found that we really liked are sites 11 and 12. (Check out the map to see the location of them). They are gravel sites (no dirt). They are private and out on a far loop. These two are fairly close to each other so maybe invite some friends to tag along and book those two sites next time. But definitely aiming for one of these on our next visit.
We also found on this far loop the Buckeye Loop Nature Trail, which we walked every morning during our stay. If we didn’t have our campground map, we may not have even have known it was there. The trail is a quick 10-15 minute walk through the woods and you are done. It was mostly flat, with some minor dips and climbs. There was some mud on the trail from the rainy weather, but overall the wet spots had rocks and logs to walk on to get through. One morning we jumped a partridge on the trail, but of course he didn’t sit still long enough for us to get a picture!

All in all, we had a great weekend at the Twin Mountain KOA. Even though it rained most of the day Saturday and we only stayed for two nights, we still got to swim, hike, sit by the campfire, play at the playground and just enjoy each other’s company, which is truly what it is all about. Would we recommend this campground for your family? Absolutely.
